Mariani
Antonio Mariani was a 17th-century luthier, often compared to the work of Brescia, which frequently featured double purfling as well as decorative purfling motifs, although no direct link has been established. The scrolls showed unusual fluting and winding, with a central ridge widening into a flat triangular shape at the front of the head. The model was carefully made but relatively unsophisticated, characterized by narrow corners and similarly small F-holes. The materials used were generally very simple, and the dark oxidized brown varnish, although of good quality, did not reach the level of contemporary Cremonese or Brescian recipes.
